A woman has gone viral after her experience in the Philadelphia Phillies game was dampened not by her drink but by the server who wanted a tip for it. She wasn’t prepared for what the server did next.
With many servers employing tricks to get higher tips these days, it’s arguable that we’re in a state of tipping fatigue. And for TikToker Larissa Domigueti (@larissadomingueti), her recent experience was the tipping point (no pun intended).
The video began with her doing her nighttime skincare routine. She exasperatedly says, “Tipping culture is so bad right now!”
She then goes on to explain how she went to the Phillies’ game with her boyfriend. Because she had recently turned 21, she says she was excited to get a drink. They initially weren’t going to but ultimately decided on a $25 tallboy and $25 beer, she adds. So, they got the drinks and headed to self-checkout, but it is here that things started to get weird.
After scanning, a woman came over asking for ID, Domigueti says. She says she made a joke about them being young and handed it back to them. She says she then cracked open the drinks and provided them with the card machine to pay for them. While the machine gave them the option to tip, Domigueti says she ultimately decided against it. When she pressed the button declining the tip, she says the lady complained that “young people never tip” and stormed off.
What Happened Next?
As a server herself, the TikToker admits that she was “so mad” about the situation. Her boyfriend, she says, advised her to let it go.
At the time, Domigueti remembers saying that she paid $50 for two drinks and was not leaving her a tip because she did nothing.
“I’m sorry, why do these people expect us to tip you for literally doing nothing you were getting paid literally a wage?” she complains.
She adds that she was “really irritated” by the situation. “Like, I don’t know who people are nowadays to just expect people to just give them money,” she says.
Later on, she notes how she was “already spending an absurd amount of money.” The TikToker then insists that the woman “did absolutely nothing but stand there and check [her] ID, which is literally [her] job.”
According to the TikToker, even if it was a situation where she was meant to tip but didn’t, she shouldn’t have reacted in that way. The video garnered 89,600 views. It is accompanied by on-screen text that reads, “Tipping culture is WAYYY out of hand!”
Who’s In The Wrong?
Commenters largely agreed with the TikToker.
“I’d complain to the Phillies about it,” one wrote. “Send in feedback that there should be no tipping for self serve options and the lady was rude.”
“Who in their right mind would tip for an overpriced canned drink??” a second asked. “I ALWAYS tip >20% on made-to-order food. But never ever for a drink at a game. Wtf.”
“There should’ve been a no tip option,” a third remarked.
And a fourth agreed, “As a server I wouldn’t have tipped either in this case.”
Should You Tip At Self-Checkouts?
Over on Reddit, one user in the r/TooAfraidToAsk subreddit asked if fellow netizens tipped at self-checkouts.
“I always feel awkward hitting ‘no tip’ because I worry the employee standing nearby thinks I’m being cheap, but it genuinely makes no sense to me,” they said.
Other users appeared to be on the same page.
“If I am standing up and checking myself out, I do not tip,” one wrote.
“The store should tip me for doing their job for them,” a second quipped.
A third simply said, “No tip.”
