Millons of people were impacted by the damage Hurricane Helene caused while making its way across the southern part of the United States at the end of September—including whoever was responsible for the massive stash of drugs that were discovered by police in Georgia during the clean-up effort.
It’s been close to two weeks since Hurricane Helene made landfall in the Florida panhandle before making its way north, and the communities that were impacted by a devastating storm that claimed more than 2225 lives and caused upwards of $50 billion in damage still have a long road ahead of them on the path to recovery.
That includes a large swath of rural areas in Georgia that were ravaged by flooding and fierce winds, and people in the town of Davisboro (located around an hour’s drive southwest of Augusta) are still dealing with power outages and other issues stemming from the storm.
Members of the Washington County Sherriff’s Office have been doing what they can to assist with the recovery efforts in the region, and earlier this week, deputies working in Davisboro came across a fairly unexpected surprise in the form of a large collection of illegal drugs they discovered in a clearing off of a highway near a prison.
The sheriff’s department posted a cheeky message on Facebook inviting whoever misplaced the stash to stop by the station along with pictures documenting an array of drugs including bags of vacuum-sealed marijuana, THC vape cartridges, edibles, cough syrup, and an assortment of pills.
It’s unclear if the drugs were already hidden there when Helene hit or if they managed to end up on the side of the highway after being swept away from a nearby location, but it’s safe to assume whoever formerly had them in their possession is not thrilled with seeing them plastered on the internet.
