Server Says Restaurants Are Keeping Tabs On You. They Know How You Tip And Treat The Servers: ‘There’s Notes About You’

A server and content creator is spilling the beans on the restaurant industry. According to him, restaurants are keeping tabs on customers who book their reservations through popular apps.

Luan (@theluanlegacy) made this claim in a viral TikTok that’s garnered over 215,000 views.

“OK, working in a restaurant, this is a public service announcement to let y’all know that restaurants keep tabs about you—the guest—when you act crazy. It’s 2026; everybody is using the same system,” he says.

“You go to a restaurant you ain’t never been to before. They check you in with your phone number. All of a sudden they know your name. And there’s a history of notes on your account,” he claims. He rattles off some examples as to what this data entails.

“Was 30 minutes late to their reservation … mean and cussing at the host stand. Stole a plate, stole a glass, stole a ramekin. Keep an eye on them!” he exclaims.

Because of these diner profiles, Luan urges customers to think twice before acting a fool when they go out to eat. In fact, he shares his own personal experience with this system. “You can’t be going to different restaurants and just acting crazy. So restaurants are keeping tabs about y’all now. I saw a note that was like do not accommodate these people. Lie about their party size to get a bigger table. I saw one that was, like, ‘Comes with random guests. Do not mention previous visits or other females that he was with,'” he says.

He adds, “Messy just messy!”

Are Popular Restaurant Reservation Apps Saving Customer Data?

Others online have shared their concerns about having personal information stored at dining establishments. In this r/Chicago Reddit thread, one person commented on seeing their name pop up in a restaurant’s system. “The moment I shared my number … [the restaurant] had my full name on their screen. Weird thing was all the 3 restaurants I put down my name at had that info,” they wrote.

Moreover, the same person stated that the businesses weren’t connected to each other in any way. “None of these restaurants were under the same group and I had never been to them before. How is this data being shared?” they wondered.

“If you ever made a reservation through [these apps] … you have a profile in their system. If the restaurant uses that system your details auto populate,” one said.

Another person in the same discussion thread mentioned that a popular point-of-sale network creates phone number-based user profiles. “Some places use Toast … if you’ve ever put your phone number for a loyalty program in any of their systems … it will remember you at a Toast terminal,” they said.

Guest Notes Do Exist

Luan’s video might sound like a way to get more people to tip so that they don’t get a “low tipper” flag on their account. However, he does seem to be sharing genuine information. Toast notes on its website that its POS system does indeed compile profiles of users that staff can access via a feature called Guestbook. The company states, “Guestbook is the master list of guests for your restaurant management group … it collects contact info, order history, bookings, feedback, loyalty activity … marketing engagement into one searchable, filterable table … into a per-guest profile you can open with a single click.”

However, there’s one specific section of the web page that directly speaks to Luan’s video. Toast says its Guestbook can be used “to understand who your guests are, [and] segment them by spending or order behavior.”

Resy writes online that it, too, features a notes system that saves user data particular to guests who use the platform. It says, “Robust guest profiles with tags, notes, spend, and history [that] can help you deliver the kind of service that turns guests into regulars.”
