TikTok user Brooke Kronschnabel (@brookekron) has gone viral after sharing how much her Ritz crackers cost at a fancy hotel.
A woman has gone viral after sharing a humorous encounter with Ritz crackers at a fancy bar in Texas. Still, it was probably less funny when she discovered the shocking price tag.
In the viral clip, which has garnered 160,200 views, TikToker Brooke Kronschnabel (@brookekron) shared footage of what looked like a server cutting up plastic packaging on a plate of Ritz crackers with a flourish.
As this happened, on-screen text read, “This fancy restaurant server opened a pack of ritz crackers like it was caviar.”
It was then followed up by further on-screen text that said, “I’m going to start doing this for my kids.”
In the comments, she clarified that the crackers, along with three dips, cost an astonishing $17. She also added that the bar in question was Bowie House, which is an Auberge hotel.
In a statement to BroBible, the TikToker said, “I wanted to post it because it was truly funny in the moment that the server was acting like the bag of Ritz was a can of caviar or a truffle that needed to be shaved.” When asked about how it has been going since she posted the video, she said, “It’s going good, I kinda post funny stuff and then forget about it.”
“Now every time I put Ritz in front of my kids I ask them if they want me to open it for them,” she concluded.
BroBible reached out to the Auberge Collection via contact form.
What Did Commenters Say?
Commenters were amused by the restaurant’s actions—and the TikToker’s engagement with them only added to this amusement.
“Ritz at a fancy restaurant they coulda done better lol,” one wrote. In turn, Kronschnabel replied: “1,00000%, but it def made me laugh. Like look at those fancy scissors!”
In turn, another said, “What sort of fancy restaurant serves Ritz crackers? That’s sad.”
The TikToker then dished the dirt in response to this comment, revealing, “It was Ritz crackers and Texas themed dips. At an Auberge hotel! Wild.”
“For 17 dollars he ain’t even take it out the plastic?” a third queried.
To which Kronschnabel responded, “Right?! They need to do more.”
More directly, a fourth commenter admitted, “I would be p—–.”
And the TikToker quipped back, “Thank goodness I was two drinks in.”
The Surprise Origin Of The Ritz Cracker Name
On the surface, Ritz crackers don’t have a lot in common with fancy restaurants. However, its very existence and origins are all about promoting the high life. As reported by Food & Wine, back in the 1930s, a man called Sydney Stern was an employee at Nabisco Biscuit Company. He was tasked by the company to think up the name and marketing plan for a new line of crackers. The stakes were pretty high, with these crackers needing to compete with business rival Sunshine Biscuits’ most popular cracker.
Stern became inspired by the circular label inside his hat. This led to him creating the Ritz logo, a blue circle with yellow lettering spelling, “Ritz.” It’s worth remembering that, in the 1930s, the U.S. was in the thick of the Great Depression. Because of this, executives were initially worried that this riff on the opulent hotel brand might not go down well with consumers. The opposite was true. Customers loved the idea of having this taste of the “high life,” and the rest is history.
The reason this is relevant is because, with this in mind, fancy restaurants relying on Ritz crackers isn’t that unusual after all.
Arguably, Ritz crackers have been a source of discourse on TikTok in the past with mysterious “goo” and allegations of “shrinkflation.” So, this reminder of its fancy origins may well be much needed.
