Ohio woman found strands of fibers connecting stuck-together Ritz crackers.
An Ohio woman buys Ritz crackers. Then she breaks them open to find stringy, hair-like fibers connecting them. But what is it?
TikToker Chenelle (@somer_rain) questioned what was inside her box of Nabisco Ritz crackers. Her video, which documents the unusual discovery, has 42,400 views.
What Did She Find Inside Her Ritz Crackers?
Chenelle begins the video by showing a pair of crackers that appear to be stuck together. When she breaks them apart, stringy grayish fibers become visible between the crackers. She also notes that the crackers appear to be notably lighter than the usual golden color.
Rather than assuming it was simply a one-time find, she begins to break apart more crackers. She finds another set stuck together and, shockingly, the fibers can be seen.
The discovery makes the video particularly unsettling. While a single strand can be dismissed as an isolated occurrence, a second find raises serious concerns.
After showing the crackers, Chenelle heads to her pantry and brings out the box they came from. She emphasizes that the box is new and shows that the expiration date is in January 2027. In other words, the product is not visibly past its printed expiration date. This leaves her further perplexed.
Could This Be A Sign Of Rope Spoilage?
Some viewers suggested that the unusual strands can be a sign of a form of spoilage.
“That’s rope spoilage,” suggested one viewer. Rope spoilage occurs when certain bacteria, including species of Bacillus, grow in baked goods under favorable conditions. The process can cause stickiness, discoloration, and thin, stringy strands when the product is pulled apart. Sometimes a fruity odor can develop.
The explanation offers a possible lead into the cause of the unusual thready strands found in the Ritz crackers.
Chenelle’s demonstration prompted a range of reactions. Most were shocked by the rope spoilage phenomenon.
One commenter wrote, “I’m 66 and never heard of rope spoilage.”
Many expressed concern about how easily they might have eaten the crackers without noticing anything unusual. “Mind you I usually put the whole cracker in my mouth,” one distressed viewer wrote.
Did Reddit Offer Another Explanation?
A Reddit post from 2021 offered another explanation for a similar discovery found in Whole Foods whole-wheat crackers. In the thread, a member claiming to work in production offered a different theory. “This is 100% frayed edges of the conveyors that take the crackers through the sheeting process,” he said while suggesting contacting the manufacturer to start an investigation.
Did Nabisco Crackers Have Prior Recalls?
In July 2018, some Ritz products were recalled due to a possible risk of salmonella contamination. No illness was reported at the time of recall. It is important to note that standard Ritz stacked crackers like the kind associated with Chenelle’s post were not part of the recall.
Chenelle turned to Nabisco for answers to what exactly was going on with the crackers. Her demonstration left many unanswered questions. Why did the crackers not have the usual appearance? What exactly are the fibers? Where were the crackers contaminated? And where did the material originate in the process of production, packaging, or storage?
Ultimately, Chenelle believes the situation should be handled by the Nabisco, Ritz company. “Y’all need to recall this product now,” she demanded.
BroBible contacted Chenelle for comment via TikTok direct message and to Nabisco via email.
