Despite previously saying Deadpool will not be featured in another movie, Ryan Reynolds now says another solo movie is in development.
Two years ago, Ryan Reynolds said, “I see Deadpool as a supporting character much more than he is a main [character] or at the center. We center him sometimes because they want, that’s what they want. But you can’t center him unless you take everything away from him. You have to create a situation where he’s so much the underdog. And I don’t think I can do that again. If he comes back, I think he’s going to be in someone else’s movie.”
More recently, this past April, Ryan Reynolds told Sunday Today, “I don’t think I’m ever going to center him again. He’s a supporting character. He’s a guy that’s great in a group.”
Fast forward to this week, and, surprise, Reynolds now says that another Deadpool movie is in the works. (That sort of thing happens when a film grosses a worldwide total of $1.338 billion like Deadpool & Wolverine did.)
So now there will be another Deadpool movie?
During a panel at Fanatics Fest over the weekend, Ryan Reynolds confirmed that there will “eventually” be another Deadpool movie.
“There’s a few really deep cuts that I think are missing behind the movies. I think there’s a few deep cuts missing from some of the comics. There’s certainly some stuff that, you know, I love that Fabian Nicieza [co-creator of Deadpool] wrote that is incredible. Gerry Duggan, who was a friend, was an incredible comic writer,” Deadline reports Reynolds said onstage during a panel at the event. “There’s stuff upcoming. There’s eventually, you know, remotely another Deadpool film. It’s going to be great.”
So now there is yet another reason to keep an eye on what happens at San Diego Comic-Con this coming weekend. Reynolds has also played down reports that Deadpool will return in Avengers: Doomsday. Will that also now change?
“Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider, Reynolds told The Hollywood Reporter in 2024. “His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can’t be accepted. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humor works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.”
