Macaulay Culkin’s Home Alone was one of the most successful film franchises in history. It’s the reason why Macaulay Culkin is a household name and A-List actor even though he hasn’t done anything meaningful in two decades. 1990’s Home Alone had multiple sequels and earned $476 million at the box office on a budget of $15 million (that $906 million in 2017 dollars adjusted for inflation).

Flash forward to present day with Hollywood trying to find a way to re-work and reboot anything they can and now Ryan Reynolds is reviving the Home Alone franchise. Stoned Alone will be an R-rated irreverent film about a lazy stoner who misses the flight to his ski trip, gets baked out of his mind, becomes paranoid about people breaking into his house, and has to fend off the real-life burglars after realizing it wasn’t the weed playing tricks on his mind.

Deadline was first to this scoop:

the new take sounds like a blend of that John Hughes-scripted family film, with the irreverence, hard R rating, and star of Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds is attached to produce Stoned Alone, which is in development at Fox. Augustine Frizzell is set to direct. Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider wrote the script from an idea by Fox exec Matt Reilly.
Stoned Alone is reminiscent of that hallowed comedy classic. It centers around a twenty-something weed growing loser who misses the plane for his holiday ski trip. He makes the best of things by getting high. Paranoia sets in and he believes he hears someone break into his house. Turns out thieves have broken in. Fully stoned and fueled by paranoia, he tries to thwart the thieves and defend his castle. Reynolds will produce through his Fox-based Maximum Effort production banner, with and Maximum Effort’s George Dewey executive producer. (via Deadline)

This movie sounds like it was tailor-made for 30-something millennials who grew up on Home Alone and are looking for a way to recapture some of that childhood nostalgia mixed with the modern irreverence we need in comedies…And I have absolutely zero problem with that. Ryan Reynolds is the man and I’m 100% confident that he’s going to make an awesome film. Look no further than the Deadpool franchise or Just Friends to know that Ryan Reynolds has what he needs to pull this off correctly.
