Do you think you live in one of the safest states in America?

I suppose that’s a slightly loaded question, considering the looting and riots going on in many places.

Did you think you’re living in the safest state in America prior to two weeks ago?

A new study published by WalletHub ranks all 50 states, from safest to least safe, and number 3 feels pretty odd right about now.

Here’s the methodology behind WalletHub’s study:

To determine the safest states in which to live, WalletHub compared the 50 states across five key dimensions: Personal & Residential Safety, Financial Safety, Road Safety, Workplace Safety, and Emergency Preparedness.

WalletHub evaluated those dimensions using 53 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights here.

Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the highest level of safety.

WalletHub then determined each state’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order our sample.

All of that mumbo jumbo lead to the rankings. Here are the top five in each category.

Safest states

1. Maine
2. Vermont
3. Minnesota
4. Utah
5. Wyoming

Yeah. Minnesota coming in at number three feels incredibly odd right now.

Especially considering two of the dimensions of safety are personal safety and emergency preparedness.

Let’s just move along…

Least Safe States

46. Texas
47. Arkansas
48. Florida
49. Louisiana
50. Mississippi

If you live in one of the safest states in America, congrats!

If you live in Mississippi, it might be time to call a realtor.

The complete rankings can be found at this link.
