‘Guess They’d Rather You Drive’: Customer DoorDashes One Too Many Alcohol Orders. Then DoorDash Sends Her An Email, Cutting Her Off

Delivery services like DoorDash have made it possible to order just about anything at basically any time.

Given this, it’s not particularly surprising that people have received a lot of oddities using the services. For example, one woman ordered Olive Garden, only to get a $300 bottle of Chanel cologne instead.

Recently, a woman on TikTok said she, too, received something strange from DoorDash. However, this woman’s oddity was not an item, but an email. Can DoorDash really stop you from ordering alcohol?

Can DoorDash Cut Off Your Alcohol Orders?

In a video with over 2 million views, TikTok user Mary Mahoney (@prettylittlelady) shows an email she claims to have received from DoorDash.

The email, which says it’s coming from “alcoholnotices,” claims that Mahoney’s days of ordering alcohol with the service are over.

This email reads as follows:

“The health and safety of our users is important to us. We have observed a high number of alcohol orders placed on your account and have removed your ability to order alcohol through DoorDash. You can still use the DoorDash app to order meals, groceries or other essentials. If you believe you may be receiving this message in error, please fill out this Appeals Form.”

In the text overlaying the post, Mahoney expresses her disbelief.

“Has this happened to anyone else???” she writes. “I didn’t know this was possible.”

What Triggered This?

Responding to a comment, Mahoney posted a follow-up video claiming she was surprised to receive this email, as, in her view, she did not order alcohol that often.

“It’s not even that much alcohol, OK?” she says in response to a comment asking about the frequency of her alcohol orders.

“They are hating on me, because what do you mean that you can get a McChicken at 2 AM and you ‘care about my health’—but I’m not allowed to order a six pack of beer?” she continues.

Is This Email Even Real?

In the comments section, some users expressed disbelief that DoorDash would send such an email.

“0% chance this is real. Not a chance they sign their company emails ‘DoorDash Alcohol,’” a user wrote.

“If this is real, that’s crazy. Too invasive,” another declared.

BroBible has reached out to DoorDash to authenticate this email. However, it should be noted that other internet users have claimed to receive similar emails in the past.

For example, on Reddit, one user on r/Alcoholism shared an email with the same text as the one received by Mahoney. This Reddit user described receiving this email as a “rock bottom” moment.

Another user on Reddit said they, too, received an email telling them their ability to order alcohol had been removed.

“I just got banned from ordering alcohol on DoorDash due to an excessive amount of orders,” the user wrote in the body of their post. “New low but I’m oddly happy about it. How embarrassing. Time to stop.”

In a comment, they posted the text of the message—showing it exactly matches Mahoney’s email.

How Can This Happen?

DoorDash has not published any specific guidelines as to what one must do to receive an email like this.

That said, there are rules on their website concerning alcohol deliveries and what might get someone banned.

Most of these rules relate to the misuse or omission of IDs. However, one rule notes that customers cannot “be intoxicated or under the influence when accepting an alcohol delivery.”

“Failure to follow these rules will result in an investigation and a corresponding enforcement decision based on the severity of non-compliance,” the website reads.

DoorDash customers can also exclude themselves from being able to receive alcohol via the service. To do this, one must submit an exclusion request. From there, they will not be able to order alcohol, nor will they receive any direct marketing communication related to alcohol promotions.

Commenters Share Their Thoughts

Other users in the comments section had their own opinions on this alleged DoorDash practice.

“I think a driver reported you,” a user speculated.

“From experience working for delivery app companies it’s not likely that this was triggered by order volume alone. Conduct with delivery personnel is typically a factor as well,” another offered.

“This could save someone’s life btw,” a third stated.

“One time I literally ordered 30 jack in the box tacos… they weren’t concerned with my health then,” a further TikToker countered.

BroBible reached out to DoorDash via email and Mahoney via Instagram and TikTok direct message.
