‘Shazam!’ Trailer Debuted At SDCC 2018, Could This Be DC’s PG-Rated Answer To ‘Deadpool’

Shazam-Zachary-Levi

DC Comics is trying something different in Shazam! than their typical comic book flicks that have gone towards a darker tone in recent years. A much more family-friendly comic book movie that isn’t necessarily a comic book movie. Taking cues from the origin story from the DC New 52 comics line, the new Shazam! movie is if you combined Tom Hanks 1988 movie Big with Superman.

The first official trailer for Shazam! debuted at the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. Here is the synopsis of the upcoming Warner Bros. movie that stars Zachary Levi as Shazam and Asher Angel as Billy Batson.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s case, by shouting out one word-SHAZAM!-this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam, courtesy of an ancient wizard.

Still a kid at heart-inside a ripped, godlike body-Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test?

Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

The movie doesn’t take itself too seriously and just imagines what a kid would do if he had superhero powers. The newest DCEU film could be attempting to be a PG-rated answer to the massively successful Deadpool.

The DC movie also stars Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, and Djimon Hounsou as The Wizard. Shazam! flies into theaters on April 5, 2019.
