Man Pays Extra To Not Sit In Middle On 5-Hour Flight. Then A Couple Puts Him In A Hard Spot—He Doesn’t Fall For It: ‘Shows Me His Cast’

When someone asks to switch airplane seats, it’s usually assumed that you’ll say yes, even if you paid for a certain seat yourself. So, was this traveler justified in not giving up his window seat?

In his video recounting the situation, TikToker Jourdan Davis (@davisjourdan) has amassed 163,900 views.

“Am I in the wrong here?” he begins. “But if I pay extra for my seat on an airplane, I’m sorry, but I don’t care who you’re traveling with. I’m not moving, and I think it’s crazy what just happened to me.”

What Should You Do If Someone Is Sitting In Your Seat On Plane?

Davis went on to explain how he was boarding his 5-hour flight on a “packed” plane and found a woman in his row. The woman was sitting in the aisle seat, and the man was sitting in his window seat.

So, the TikToker says he told the man he was in his seat. In response, he says the woman asked if the man could sit there because his arm was broken. The man then showed him his cast.

In turn, Davis says while he told the couple he felt terrible about the arm, he didn’t understand how that impacted his ability to sit in the middle seat.

To viewers, he emphasized how the middle seat “sucks” and that he specifically paid to not be seated in the middle.

Still unwilling to back down, the woman said it was just really uncomfortable for her husband to sit in the middle.

“Yes, that is exactly why I didn’t book it,” Davis says to viewers. “I get it. Nobody has ever walked on to an airplane excited about the middle seat. But, here’s the thing: It is preventative.”

After another rejection, the woman says she thought someone “nice” would understand.

“Oh, I understand completely,” he says. “You want the aisle. He wants the window. And this feels like some type of scam to me, and I’m not giving in. Absolutely not.”

It Escalates

However, other people were listening. Because of this, Davis notes that he probably looked like an “a—hole” for both blocking the aisle standing there and refusing an injured man. Still, he says he spoke “nicely” to the man, explaining he paid for the seat and prefers to sit there.

He says the man then started yelling at him.

Davis says he responded with humor, quipping, “At least in the middle you get two armrests.” But the passenger didn’t appreciate the joke. He “flips out” and hit the flight attendant button, per Davis. The man continued to yell at him and everyone else, according to David. He says people were groaning because they couldn’t get past, but the TikToker had nowhere to go.

The Flight Attendant Intervenes

“At this point, I don’t even want to sit next to him at all,” he remarks. So, Davis asks the attendant if there are any other seats. There was just another middle seat in the front.

The attendant asked the wife if she could take the middle and Davis could take the aisle. Davis says that he agreed to this out of respect to others, even though he doesn’t like the aisle seat.

However, the wife reportedly said “no,” saying she needed the aisle to stretch her legs.

So, the attendant asked if anyone on the plane wanted to give up their window seat. No one did.

“So what the f—- are you guys judging me for?” he asks. “I paid for this window, honestly, I’m not giving it up.”

Eventually, the flight attendant got the man in the cast to sit in the middle. David sat in the window seat, and the man made a point to “moan and groan” the whole flight.

Ultimately, he calls it the “longest flight of [his] life.”

“Who’s the a——— here?” he asks.

Who Is In The Wrong?

Most commenters agreed that Davis was in the right.

“You are NOT wrong,” one wrote. “Broken arm or not, you paid for your seat I wish they would put a sign up before entering the aircraft, ‘There will be no asking to switch seat.'”

“My family and I were just in a car accident on vacation and had to fly back,” a second shared. “My mom was in a neck collar and I was in a wheelchair. You know what we did? Paid to select seats that would be comfortable.”

“You are not in the wrong at all,” a third agreed. “They could have spoken with someone at check-in about getting him a new seat if it was actually medically necessary.”

“Oh my god even the wife doesn’t sit in the middle for her husband why should anyone else?!” a fourth asked.

How Common Is This?

Davis’ issue isn’t particularly uncommon. Multiple TikTokers have gone viral in the past after experiencing similar situations. As previously reported by BroBible, TikTok user Mel Mitchell (@thebaddestmitch) also dealt with this issue. Just like Davis, she arrived on her 4-and-a-half-hour Delta flight to somebody sitting in her window seat.

“If you are with your family, y’all get separated in seats, which is an inconvenience… that is on Delta. Take it up with the gate agent,” she said at the time. “And [if] you want someone to switch seats with you, do not sit in the seats first and ask questions later. You sit in your assigned seats, and [then] be like, ‘Hey, is it OK if we switch?'”

She went on to explain how a small child was in her seat and that the group insisted on sitting together because they were a family.

“I’m just like, ‘Don’t care. I paid for the seat,'” she said. While the husband offered his seat, it wasn’t her exact seat. Still, she ended up sitting in her window seat, although the family were “passive aggressive” toward her during the flight.

“This is unfortunate; it’s an inconvenience, but it’s my seat,” she said. “Take that up with the people. Or at least, ask first. But… I don’t owe you my seat.”

If someone is being difficult and demanding you switch seats with them, it’s best to involve a flight attendant.
