There is a multiverse of possibilities open to Sony right now as they try to figure out what is next for the Spider-Man franchise. They just reintroduced Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield and now fans want to see their stories continued. “Into The Spider-Verse” is building it’s own animated universe.

Morbius, Venom, and Kraven have all been given their own spin-offs. Now they have made a casting that has massive implications for the future of their Spider-Man properties. Today it was announced that Dakota Johnson was cast as the star of Sony’s “Madame Web”.

My fellow 90s kids will remember Madame Web as the old lady from the Spider-Man animated series who would randomly show up to hit Peter Parker with riddles and warn him about abstract threats. Eventually we found out she was preparing him for the series’ version of “Secret Wars”.

However, it is her connection to other spider characters that really makes this news interesting. Madame Web is also connected with Spider-Woman, a character who is also rumored to appear soon in live action. In the comics the second Spider-Woman, Julia Carpenter, also eventually becomes the second Madame Web.

It seems likely that Dakota Johnson would be playing that version of Madame Web given that she is only 32 years old. This would hopefully lead to a live-action Spider-Woman as well as appearances from other female spider characters like Spider Gwen and Silk.

There are so many ways that Sony can build off of the wild success of “No Way Home”. Hopefully the casting of Johnson as Madame Web is just the start of expanding the Spider-Verse in live action.
