South Park co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone in front of South America map
Every since South Park first premiered on August 13, 1997 the show has been at the forefront of Comedy, and not just because it appears on Comedy Central. Co-creators Trey Park and Matt Stone possess an uncanny ability to identify emerging trends across the cultural zeitgeist and turn them into fodder for jokes.
Case in point: Trey Parker and Matt Stone have announced they are changing the show’s name. Henceforth, South Park will be named South America.
‘South Park’ Creators Announce They’re Changing The Show’s Name To ‘South America’
The announcement comes hot on the heels of Google and Apple both altering their Maps products, Google Maps and Apple Maps, to show ‘Lake America’ instead of Lake Ontario. Does it matter that the name Lake Ontario dates back to the 1640s and predates the founding of the United States by around 130 years? No, it does not.
In an announcement on X, the show’s co-creators said they were “inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA. We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.”
Here is their full statement:
This comes less than 48 hours after President Trump shared an image on social media where he floated the idea of changing the name of New Mexico to New America. New Mexico’s Governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, responded below stating that the state’s name is not up for debate and that the state’s name, like Lake Ontario, predates the existence of the United States of America.
New Mexico’s name isn’t up for debate — it’s been ours since before the United States existed. What is up for debate? Who’s showing up for working families.

If we’re being honest, South America has a nice ring to it. Mr. Garrison would love this idea through and through.
For those that have not see the latest name change on Google Maps yet, it appears like this for Americans:

Is this a permanent change for Google and Apple? Only time will tell.
