While Steven Spielberg is obviously best known for his litany of legendary feature films, the iconic director actually got his start on television way back in the day. And now, according to the Academy Award winner, he’s ready to return to the medium.

During a recent interview with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes on their Smartless podcast, Spielberg not only expressed a desire and intention to direct a television series but he even name-checked HBO’s Mare of Easttown as something he would’ve liked to direct.

“I do have an appetite for long-form, and someday, I will direct a long-form series,” Spielberg said during an interview on Smartless.  “I mean, if someone would have brought me ‘Mare of Easttown,’ I would have done that. That was a beautifully directed story.”

Mare of Easttown, which hit HBO back in 2021, starred fellow Oscar winner Kate Winslet, was created by Brad Ingelsby and directed by Craig Zobel, who had previously helmed episodes on series such as The Leftovers, American Gods, and Westworld.

Despite now being 76 years old, Spielberg remains as prolific as ever. In 2021, he directed the Academy Award-nominated West Side Story, and this year, he helmed the semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans, which is also expected to be a Best Picture contender at the Oscars this year.

Next up, the filmmaking legend will be remarking (sort of) the 1968 Steve McQueen-starring thriller Bullitt with Bradley Cooper in the lead role. According to reports, though, the film will not be a direct remake but rather a new story based on the character.

Given the revelation that Spielberg is interested in directing a television project, it’s only a matter of time until the likes of Netflix, Apple, and Prime Video give him a call — if they haven’t already.
