'Supergirl' has ended its theatrical run with just $126M at the box office

Supergirl has officially completed its theatrical run and has finished as an all-time bomb for DC. Adjusted for inflation, Supergirl grossed less than 2004’s infamously disastrous Catwoman.

The final totals for Supergirl are in, and they aren’t pretty, as the film grossed $125.9 million globally during the course of its theatrical run — $72.1 million domestically and $53.8 million internationally.

With a reported $170 million production budget and additional marketing costs, Warner Bros. is expected to lose an estimated $200 million on the project, making it the worst-performing DC tentpole in history.

Catwoman, considered one of the most notorious comic book movie disasters in Hollywood history, made $82.4 million worldwide when it hit theaters back in 2004. Adjusted for inflation, that would be roughly $145 million in today’s dollars, meaning it made more money than Supergirl did.

The film opened to $38 million domestically, earned a B- CinemaScore, and never recovered from poor word-of-mouth reception.

It’s a borderline disastrous development for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DCU following 2025’s Superman, which was both profitable and generally well-received.

The contrast between the two films’ performances raises uncomfortable questions about whether the reboot has genuine audience traction or whether Superman‘s success was driven by the character rather than the new creative direction, which is now facing intensified scrutiny following Supergirl‘s faceplant.

Next up for the DCU will be Clayface, which is set to hit theaters on October 23. Produced for a reported $40 million, Clayface faces a far easier path to profitability than Supergirl did. Still, considering the disappointment of Supergirl, DC Studios not only needs Clayface to be financially successful but also a cultural hit that reignites excitement about the DCU.
