It’s been a little more than four years since the world suffered a truly devastating loss after the Choco Taco was discontinued. Thankfully, Taco Bell is stepping up to fill the void with a new offering that seems poised to set a new standard for mass-produced ice cream treats inspired by Mexican food.

In 1983, a Philadelphia man and culinary genius named Alan Drazen molded an ice cream cone in the shape of a taco, filled it with vanilla ice cream, and topped it with peanuts and chocolate, a frozen concoction he dubbed the “Choco Taco.”

He originally peddled them from the ice cream truck he drove for a local operation in Philly before it started being distributed across the country just two years later. In 1989, the company that produced the Choco Taco was purchased by Unilever, which welcomed it to the Good Humor/Klondike family.

It remained there for over 30 years before tragedy struck in the summer of 2022, as the folks at Klondike quietly discontinued the Choco Taco before sparking a decidedly more vocal reaction from people online.

The product remains dead and buried to this day, but what seems to be a new and improved version is now available across the United States thanks to Taco Bell.

Taco Bell is selling its own version of the Choco Taco

A number of smaller ice cream shops and brands whipped up their own version of the Choco Taco in the wake of its demise, including Salt and Straw, an operation based in Portland, Oregon, which had already been selling what it dubbed the “Chocolate Tacolate.”

In 2024, Taco Bell announced it had joined forces with Salt & Straw for a cinnamon ancho chocolate taco that was only available at the latter’s stores and quickly sold out after going on sale in 2025. However, the brand that directs its customers to “Live Màs” is now bringing it to the masses.

On Tuesday, Taco Bell announced its stores will be carrying the Salt & Straw Churro Ice Cream Taco, which is described as “a crispy waffle cone shell filled with the brand-new Churro Ice Cream, covered with puffed rice and a dark chocolate-flavored coating.”

The taco will be available at Taco Bell stores across the country for a “limited time” as of Tuesday, and a frozen drink that harnesses the frozen treat will also be sold at Live Más Café locations.

The Choco Taco is dead. Long live the Churro Ice Cream Taco.
