Taco Bell sign next to a bowl of guacamole
Most brands that run contests and sweepstakes end up selecting a winner by luck of the draw. However, one man in Spain took advantage of a promotion Taco Bell was running by purchasing an absurd amount of guacamole in a successful quest to get the company to cover his rent for a year.
In 2017, an Australian real estate mogul appeared on the country’s version of 60 Minutes in an interview where he asserted millennials weren’t able to afford to buy a home because they were spending too much money on coffee and “smashed avocado.”
What was presumably intended to come across as sage advice stressing the importance of responsible spending and saving instead became a meme among disillusioned members of younger generations who roundly mocked Garner for focusing on micro issues as opposed to the macroeconomic realities that serve as the primary barrier to entry for most people.
“Avocado toast” has since become an emblematic symbol of the divide between Bootstrap Evangelists and people with a lived experience that’s convinced them there’s only so much they can do to overcome a system they feel is stacked against them in a world where income inequality has become impossible to ignore.
Another dish made with avocados served as the inspiration for a contest that Taco Bell ran in Spain over the summer, and one man won’t have to worry about paying his rent for the foreseeable future after hatching what turned out to be a brilliant plan.
A man in Spain spent over $1,300 on Taco Bell to get the company to pay his rent
In July, the Guacamole Chicken Burrito returned to Taco Bell locations in Spain. The following month, the brand rolled out the “Guacabono” promotion, where it nodded to the aforementioned meme while promising to pay a year’s worth of rent to the customer who ordered the highest number of items containing guacamole between July 22nd and August 9th.
That was an enticing offer when you consider that more than 85% of people between the ages of 16 and 29 still live with members of their immediate family in a country where the average rent is nearly 100% of the average person’s income at that point in life.
The contest came to the attention of a man who goes by “Follaldre” on X, and he recently posted a thread documenting his quest to win the contest by ordering 1,200 single-serving cups of guacamole priced at €1 apiece (which would run you a little less than $1,350 as of this writing).
¡Abro hilo! 🥑

He said he drew inspiration from the pudding sweepstakes that was incorporated into the movie Punch-Drunk Love, and he claimed he cleared out six different Taco Bell locations in addition to his entire bank account while attempting to earn the top spot.
It ended up working out, as he eventually received an email informing him that he won the contest
Y ME LLAMARON LOCO. https://t.co/EisMhuorsY

It’s unclear how much he’s paying for rent, but it seems like it was worth it when you consider Taco Bell offered to cover up to €14,400 (~$16,100) in rent payments, which is good for a 1,100% return on his initial investment.
