A woman posted a video about a protein hack she found at P. Terry's. Here's why she's going to the chain once a week to get it.
For many athletes and health-conscious individuals, finding fast-food meals that adhere to a strict diet can be a puzzle. But for P. Terry’s customers, there appears to be at least one menu item that can make the search easier.
Jaime Elle (@jamie_elle_) recently shared a high-protein food hack she discovered. The content creator tells her audience to go to P. Terry’s, a popular chain in Texas, to grab its $5 crispy chicken bites. According to her, the bites—without a combo—have 42 grams of protein per serving with relatively strong macros.
P. Terry’s $5 Crispy Chicken Bites
Jaime Elle tells her audience that since discovering P. Terry’s crispy chicken bites, she’s been getting them once a week. But are the macros too good to be true?
P. Terry’s nutritional information confirms that the crispy chicken bites contain 13 grams of fat, 13 grams of carbohydrates, and 42 grams of protein. A serving size, which contains 8 pieces, is only 300 calories, at least according to P. Terry’s estimate.
Notably, the chicken bites have 600 milligrams of sodium, which is only 89 milligrams less than a cheeseburger. According to the American Heart Association, most health-minded individuals should strive to have around 1,500 milligrams per day, with a maximum of 2,300 milligrams per day. The sodium content can easily fit into a health-conscious individual’s diet, as long as they average around 450 milligrams for their other meals.
Considering the menu item’s other macros, it’s considered a clear winner. On r/austinfood, one person said that the macros were better than some steaks.
“These are some of the craziest macros I’ve seen from a fast food chain,” they added.
Other commenters, however, weren’t surprised. One such commenter said, “In my experience, chicken nuggets tend to have pretty decent macro breakdowns; they just lack fiber and can be a tad high in fat but not too bad.”
Other Healthy Fast-Food Options
Jaime Elle named one of the only caveats with the menu option in her video.
“ P. Terry’s is in Texas. I don’t know if there [are] other places,” she said. As of 2026, all of P. Terry’s locations are in Texas. Most of the chain’s locations are in San Antonio and Austin, which even limits customers who want to try the high-protein option in Dallas or Houston.
So where does that leave other individuals looking for good macros?
For healthier options, there are still a few good fast food picks. Chick-fil-A has 8-count grilled nuggets, which have 130 calories and 23 grams of protein. A double order of grilled nuggets, then, offers its customers a little more protein than P. Terry’s regular 8-count.
Popeyes blackened chicken tenders have been a longstanding option for individuals who need food but are trying to hit a protein goal. An order typically contains three tenders, which have 170 calories and 28 grams of protein. Customers can also order five tenders, which have 280 calories and 47 grams of protein.
Chipotle offers its customers a plethora of ways to optimize macros, depending on what they order.
However, the P. Terry’s $5 crispy chicken bites is the most affordable out of all the options.
But outside of fast food, there are always some affordable and cheap options at home. Grilled chicken, on its own, has great macros. Some grocery stores offer high-protein, lightly breaded chicken nuggets that fit within a health-conscious diet when eaten in moderation.
In a comment to BroBible, Jaime Elle said she landed on the chicken bites after comparing calories to protein.
“If you add a ‘0’ to the protein grams and it’s larger than the calorie number, then to me that’s a good macro choice! Sometimes I workout, [fast] and then I grab them on my way home as sort of a brunch meal. No fries!” she said.
When it comes to alternatives, she recommends the grilled chicken nuggets from Chick-fil-A with fat-free honey mustard dressing.
