Emmy-winning actor Matthew Rhys starred in the definitive modern Russian spy project when he led The Americans alongside his wife Keri Russell from 2013 to 2018. And the series may be more relevant now than ever.

Speaking to BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast ahead of the release of his upcoming AppleTV series Widow’s Bay — premiering on Wednesday, April 29 — Emmy-winning The Americans star Matthew Rhys discussed how his perspective on the hit FX series has changed in the almost 15 years since it first premiered.

Emmy-winning The Americans star Matthew Rhys says that Russians have always and will always engage in espionage

Eric Italiano, BroBible: How has your perspective on that show changed as the world has changed? Not trying to corner you with any kind of political answer — just how has your perception of it changed over the years?

Matthew Rhys: The show creator Joe Weisberg was a CIA operative himself, and what he said to me once was: the Russians have been doing this since Winston Churchill talked about the iron curtain — they were on to this from day one and will continue to do so until the end of time. And it’s not just the Russians — every country with a prosperous intelligence community will be doing this. It’s been going on and will continue, which is why it’s endless fruit for books and films and television.

In addition to Rhys in the lead role of Mayor Tom Loftis, Widow’s Bay also stars Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kevin Carroll, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Dale Dickey, K. Callan, and Jeff Hiller. Check out the official synopsis and trailer for Widow’s Bay below.

“Widow’s Bay is a quaint island town 40 miles off the coast of New England. But something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) is desperate to modernize this fading town. There’s no Wi-Fi, spotty cellular reception, and a struggling local economy. Worst of all, he must contend with superstitious locals who believe the island is cursed. Loftis wasn’t born here, and after all these years, he is still an outsider to these stubborn folk. But he is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination. Miraculously, he succeeds: tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true, start happening again.”
