‘The Flash’ Is Going To Wind Up With Less Money Than One Of The Consensus Worst Superhero Films Ever Made

It’s been a bad summer for ill-conceived and over-budgeted blockbuster movies.

There’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destinywhich reportedly still hasn’t made back its $329 million budget, likely winding up as one of the biggest flops in the esteemed history of Disney.

Then, of course, there’s the already infamous The Flash, which has not only turned out to be an embarrassing box office bomb for Warner Bros., but it’s actually going to wind up with less money at the domestic box office than Green Lantern, which is widely considered to be one of the worst superhero films ever made. Congratulations, Ryan Reynolds — you can rest now.

The box office failures of The Flash highlight what a monumental task James Gunn has taken on as the new co-CEO and creative mastermind of the newly-rebooted DCU, as it appears that not even the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman was enough to send movie fans flocking to the theaters.

Making matters worse is the fact that the studio still has two more films that were developed under previous regimes– Blue Beetle, which releases in August (and looks remarkably average), and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is currently scheduled for December. If audiences weren’t showing up for a movie that featured two different versions of Batman, what chance does Blue Beetle stand?

The first film in Gunn’s fresh take on the DC Universe will be Superman: Legacy, which cast most of its major roles in recent weeks. Set to release in July of 2025, Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

While Lex Luthor is also set to be in the film, that role has yet to be cast. Potential candidates reportedly include Nicholas Hoult, Alexandar Skarsgard, and Bill Skarsgard.
