Netflix Releases The Astounding Viewership Numbers For ‘The Irishman’ In Its First Week

Netflix

Disclaimer: I very much *loved* The Irishman. While I totally hear the complaints about the (at times) clunky de-aging and the daunting length of the film, none of these factors really bothered me.

You see, our opportunities to see Scorsese at work — particularly with these guys making a movie about this topic — are waning as the years go by. After all, the legendary director is no spring chicken at the age of 77-years-old.

So, heading into the film, instead of hoping and expecting to be blown away by a drug-fueled adrenaline rush similar to Goodfellas, I simply viewed The Irishman as a cinematic event, as a goodbye.  And because of that fact, I was able to truly appreciate The Irishman for what it was: a culmination of forty-years of filmmaking.

Yet, despite the seemingly endless complains about various aspects of the film — yes, I KNOW, De Niro looked utterly ridiculously when he was “kicking” the shit out of the grocery story owner — The Irishman has been a runaway success, as its not only already racking up award nominations, but it has put up some seriously mind-blowing ratings.

According to Netflix’s official film Twitter account, The Irishman  “watched by 26,404,081 accounts globally.”

Now, to be clear, Netflix defines a “viewer” as someone who completes 70% of the film. But, with a movie like The Irishman, if you’ve watched 70% of the film — which is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of two-and-a-half hours — then odds are you likely watched the movie in its entirety.

The Irishman, which was recently nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes, is now streaming on Netflix.
