Despite perhaps not having the same virtually perfect approval rating that he used to have, The Rock remains one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, as evidenced by his reported fee for his upcoming Christmas film Red One.

Despite recent films such as Jungle Cruise, Red Notice (although Netflix says it’s their biggest movie ever), and Black Adam not being the type of successes that The Rock is used to, Amazon Prime Video is obviously still comfortable betting on him as the 51-year-old is set to make $50 million upfront for Red One, which is set to release later this year. According to Puck News, this is the most an actor has ever been paid for a single role upfront.

When the project was first announced back in 2021, Prime Video and The Rock’s Seven Bucks Production company used some pretty grim buzzwords to describe the project, making it sound more like a product than a movie.

Red One is a “unique concept that represents a property that could encompass not only a tentpole film but could reach beyond entertainment across multiple industries and businesses.”

Furthermore, “sources said the businesses could include the gift-giving enterprises that thrive during the holiday season (and that, of course, includes Amazon and Amazon Prime).”

Directed by Jake Kasdan — who has also helmed The Rock in his two Jumanji movies — Red One, which is being sold as a “reimagining” of holiday mythology, will also star Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, J.K. Simmons, Nick Kroll, Kieran Shipka, and more.

At this time, Red One — which began production in October of last year and wrapped back in February — does not have an official release date.
