Google took over the ‘Sphere’ in Las Vegas for the second time this month. The $1.5 trillion tech company used their newest campaign to directly troll Amazon.

Multiple advertisements ran on the Sphere for Google Chrome throughout the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Google followed it up with an active campaign for Google Cloud this week.

While it may not seem like that big of a deal, the timing of the promotion makes it especially savage. Google is trolling Amazon. It is an intentional, targeted effort.

Amazon kicked off a week-long conference in Las Vegas on Monday called ‘AWS re: Invent.’ The conference is focused on the cloud.

Come together with cloud enthusiasts from around the world to hear the latest cloud industry innovations, meet with AWS experts, have fun, and build connections. You’ll gain skills and expertise that would take weeks or months to learn at home.

Meanwhile, as Amazon hosts its cloud conference, Google is lighting up the Sphere to promote its own product. And the caption to its YouTube video references “April 9-11,” when Google will descend upon Sin City for a conference of its own called ‘Cloud Next ’24.’

Every single move surrounding the new Sphere campaign is calculated and intentional. Google knew exactly what it was doing and paid a decent chunk of change to do so.

Advertising rates for the Sphere are out of this world. Google spent no less than $650,000 to have its week-long ad run on the exosphere throughout Amazon’s conference week.

That number, of course, is chump change to such a massive conglomerate. Even still, to pony up more than half of a million dollars just to throw shade at a rival is pretty epic.

Google saw Amazon’s conference dates, circled the calendar, and made sure that the world’s most viral entertainment venue would focus on its product — not the product of a competitor that drew thousands of tech fanatics to Las Vegas just up the road.

Every single penny was worth it. Especially now that we’re all talking about the troll!
