  • Director George Miller hasn’t released a film since 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.
  • His new film Three Thousand Years of Longing hits theaters on August 31.
  • The first teaser for the film showcases Miller’s unique talents.

Due to my A.D.D., I find it extremely difficult to read. Getting through ten pages can sometimes take 30 minutes. I enjoy reading, I really do, and I wish I could do it more. It’s just a legitimately difficult task for my brain.

Nevertheless, despite this, I recently breezed through (at least by my standards), the recently released Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, which was written by New York Times writer Kyle Buchanan.

The 350ish-page book details the two-decade-long journey of Mad Max: Fury Road becoming a twinkle in director George Miller’s eye to one of the greatest action films ever made. And what I learned about Miller is that he is a man who is unrelenting when it comes to his vision. A vision that — as evidenced by his truly bizarre filmography — is quite unique.

That vision, though, is usually the trademark of excellent directors, which is very much what Miller is, therefore making everything he releases, as few and far between as the projects may be, a must-see. And his latest film (which is also his first since Fury Road), the Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton-starring Three Thousand Years of Longing, certainly qualifies as a must-see based on this brief yet still totally bonkers teaser (the full trailer drops this Friday).

Here’s the official synopsis for Three Thousand Years of Longing, which will hit theaters on August 31:

Dr. Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) is an academic – content with life and a creature of reason. While in Istanbul attending a conference, she happens to encounter a Djinn (Idris Elba) who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom.

This presents two problems. First, she doubts that he is real and second, because she is a scholar of story and mythology, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. The Djinn pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Eventually she is beguiled and makes a wish that surprises them both.

In addition to Three Thousand Years of Longing, Miller also has Furiosa, the Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth-starring Fury Road prequel about Charlize Theron’s iconic character, set to release in 2024. According to Blood, Sweat & Chrome, Hemsworth will be playing the villain in the film.
