Tom Cruise Reportedly Put His Weight Behind The Actors In Strike Against The Studios

Given what he pulled off last year with Top Gun: Maverick and his unrelenting commitment to making Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in the throes of the recent pandemic, I’ve recently started to refer to Tom Cruise as Movie Theater Jesus.

While it can certainly be argued that Cruise — almost single-handily — resurrected the movie theater business, the easier and more explainable position to take is that the industry would simply not be the same without him.

Cruise isn’t all talk and bravado, either, as a new report details how the mega-star put his weight behind the actors in their strike against the studios.

“Tom Cruise Zoomed into a June negotiating session to urge the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to hear out the guild’s concerns on the issue.”

“He also wanted to urge the AMPTP to support the guild’s position on stunt performers… Cruise also had some words for SAG-AFTRA reps regarding the delicate post-pandemic state of movie theaters.” [via The Hollywood Reporter]

In addition to the actors, the writers guild is also currently on strike, making it the first time that both actors and writers have been on strike in 60 years.

Cruise, of course, can most recently be seen starring in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which, despite Cruise’s endless efforts and the massive global press tour that the cast embarked on, underperformed during its first weekend at the domestic box office, as it racked up $80 million.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One fared far better overseas, though, as it made $155 million internationally, bringing its cumulative total for its opening weekend to $235 million, which is a new record for the long-running franchise.

Alongside Cruise, Dead Reckoning Part One also stars Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, and more. You can check out the official trailer for the film below.
