  • Marvel Studios dropped a new trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness during the Super Bowl.
  • The trailer teases the return of Patrick Stewart’s beloved Professor X.
  • Professor X, seemingly part of the MCU’s “Illuminati”, could just be one of many titanic cameos in the film.

If the latest trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is any indication, the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Univers Phase Four film is about to completely upend the franchise entirely.

Not only did the trailer confirm the appearance of Patrick Stewart’s iconic Professor X from the OG X-Men franchise, but there’s speculation that tons of iconic characters could appear, particularly those that are a part of the Illuminati, which is effectively a secret society of Marvel’s smartest heroes that keep an eye on the multiverse.

From Mister Fantastic to Deadpool, from Captain Carter to Namor, there’s been tons of giddy conversation about who could be unleashed in this paradigm-shifting film. Undoubtedly the most tantalizing idea, though, has been the speculation that Tom Cruise — who was famously in the mix to play Tony Stark when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was being conceived around 15 years ago — could star as an alternate universe version of Iron Man, particularly a character named Superior Iron Man.

The references to a potential Superior Iron Man are two-fold: the first, and more obvious, is the presence of Ultron bots, which suggest that in this universe — which seems to be putting the main MCU Doctor Strange on trial for his “crimes against the multiverse” — Tony Stark’s Ultron plan succeeded.

The other is that some fans believe the glowing character seen fighting Wanda Maximoff is Cruise’s Superior Iron Man (to be fair, others are speculating that it’s an alternate universe version of Captain Marvel, potentially played by Teyonah Parris, who plays Monica Rambeau in the MCU).

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was directed by Spider-Man filmmaker Sam Raimi and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams, is set to hit theaters in the United States on Friday, May 6.
