There have been a lot of horror stories when it comes to flying, but passengers on a Asiana Airlines flight headed towards the South Korean city of Daegu can probably trump most of them.

That’s because they experienced the terror of a plane door opening while the craft was still in the air on Friday.

According to the Yonhap News Agency, the plane door opened in mid-air when a passenger grabbed the emergency exit lever.

The Asiana Airlines plane was traveling from Jeju Island and was carrying 194 passengers, including 48 teenage athletes.

Thankfully, the plane was not far from its final destination and was able to be landed safely with the door open. It was already on approach and was down to 650 feet in altitude when the door was opened.

Nine passengers were reportedly taken to the hospital with breathing difficulties after the plane landed in Daegu.

“Children quivered and cried in panic,” one woman who was on the flight said. “Those sitting near the exit must have been shocked the most.”

Daily Mail reports that some passengers on board attempted to stop the man from opening the door, but obviously failed to do so.

A male passenger in his 30s who was believed to be the one who opened the door was detained by police for questioning. So far, no motive for why he would do such a thing has been revealed.

“Police are questioning him jointly with the land and transport ministry over aviation safety laws violations,” the Transport Ministry said.

“Under these laws, a person who opens a plane door without authorization is subject to a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.”

“It was chaos with people close to the door appearing to faint one by one and flight attendants calling out for doctors on board through broadcasting while others were running down the aisle in panic,” another passenger said.

“I thought the plane was blowing up. I thought I was going to die like this.”
