Wild pigs might not get talked about often, but they’re one of the most destructive invasive mammals in North America.
According to a report by Conservation Frontlines, there are around 5 to 6 million wild pigs across 38 states, causing roughly $1.5 billion in damage and control costs each year. Their population comes from a mix of escaped domestic swine, Eurasian wild boar, and hybrids.
What makes wild pigs especially difficult to control, the organization says, is how quickly they reproduce, how freely they move, and how easily they adapt to pressure.
It’s one thing to know that, and another to actually run into them.
That’s exactly what happened to one man, whose encounter was shared in a viral TikTok posted by @brii_h3.
How Did the Man Encounter Wild Pigs?
In the video, which has garnered over 2.4 million views, the man is walking down a road at night while filming what’s happening behind him.
“So I’m walking down and I got like 20 pigs following me,” he says.
The animals trail behind him calmly, keeping their distance but not backing off.
“I don’t know what to do,” he says, adding that every time he stops, they stop too.
As he’s walking, it’s clear his tone starts to change.
“OK, now I’m starting to get scared,” he says. “I don’t know, should I run?”
By the end of the clip, he’s pretty unsettled.
“Help, help. Help me,” he says.
Viewers Found The Situation Entertaining
In the comments section, many viewers joked about the situation rather than treating it as a threat.
“Slowest police chase I’ve ever seen,” one person wrote.
“You’re literally bringing home the bacon,” another said.
“Ur officially a Disney Prince,” a third added.
“Dog I live in Texas and the armadillo started doing this with me on my nightly walks. I felt like a tejano Disney princess,” another shared.
What Should You Do In This Situation?
According to a blog post by Stone Age Man, running isn’t always the best move if the pigs are already close to you. They’re fast and can easily catch up if they decide to chase.
If the animals continue approaching, one option is to create distance by getting to higher ground, like climbing a tree if one is nearby. Wild pigs can’t climb, so even a few feet off the ground can make a difference.
If there’s no easy way to get away, one should focus on protecting oneself. That can mean putting space between you and the animal using whatever you have on hand, or staying upright and ready to react.
One of the most important things is avoiding falling. It increases the risk of serious injury, especially from tusks, which can cause deep wounds.
Encounters don’t usually last long, but if one does escalate, you should get medical attention quickly since wild pigs can carry bacteria that may lead to infection.
