Gandalf Was Offered $1.5 Million To Officiate The Wedding Of A Facebook Billionaire (He Turned It Down)

With an estimated net worth of around $55 million, Sir Ian McKellen doesn’t need to take random jobs because he’s sitting on a ridiculous pile of cash. That didn’t stop Facebook billionaire and former Napster founder Sean Parker from attempting to throw $1.5 million at him though according to reports and I’m sitting here wondering just how fucking rich you have to be to turn down an offer of $1.5 million all for just one night of work.

PageSix reports:

Sir Ian McKellen was offered $1.5 million to dress up as Gandalf from “The Lord of the Rings” movies and officiate at the wedding of a Facebook billionaire — but he turned it down.
Napster founder and first Facebook president Sean Parker asked the actor three years ago to play dress up at his lavish, $10 million wedding to singer Alexandra Lenas, The Daily Mail reported Saturday.
Gandalf sent his regrets.
“I was offered one-and-a-half million dollars to marry a very famous couple in California, which I would perhaps have considered doing, but I had to go dressed as Gandalf,” McKellen told the Mail.
“So I said, ‘I am sorry, Gandalf doesn’t do weddings.’”
Gandalf would have been right at home.

$55 million. I guess that is my answer. You need to have $55 million in the bank before you can turn down someone’s offer of $1.5 million for one night’s work.

For Sean Parker’s part, his wedding was completely fucking over the top. The type of wedding a Russian Tzar would throw for his first daughter. It was Sean Parker’s flaming middle finger to everyone in Silicon Valley that he thought had spurned him throughout his Napster debacle, but at the same time he destroyed California’s Redwood Forest to throw his party and that’s pretty fucked up. You can see pictures of the wedding over on Vanity Fair.
