Maisie Williams Confirmed A ‘Game Of Thrones’ Character Death And Crushed Any Possibility Of A Fan Theory Being True

You never know who’s alive and who’s dead on Game of Thrones – no, really. Dead people keep coming back to life and living people keep getting slaughtered, so honestly for all we know Robb Stark is secretly Varys and Cersei is just his direwolf in disguise. And while theory I just made up is complete bullshit and makes zero sense, there’s one (of many) deceased character from season one who people have been hoping would make a comeback on the show:

Syrio Forel, Arya’s sword instructor.

People (myself included) have long hoped that since Syrio’s death was not blatantly shown on screen that he somehow managed to make it out of the duel with Ser Meryn Trant, despite the fact that Trant had rendered him weaponless. The idea goes that since Syrio is from Braavos, and Jaqen H’ghar is a faceless man training Arya who is also from Braavos, that the two are one in the same and that Syrio has actually been coaching her all along.

Unfortunately, as you should have been able to surmise from the title, this is not true:

Williams told IGN: ‘I always was like, “Oh, no, I feel like he’s still alive”. I always had my own theory that he and Jaqen were the same person. [But the showrunners said] “No, he is dead”

‘I was like, “Oh, OK.” So that put that to bed really quickly, but I guess we can all still dream. Maybe if it’s not in the show, it will be in the book, and that will be great.’

Considering the books are coming out at slower than snail pace, I’d have to say that it probably won’t be in the book either. George R.R. Martin has so many subplots and so many characters to keep track of that I’m not sure he can handle bringing one more back to life just to provide readers with shit to kick around.

But who knows? Maybe Maisie is lying – but we’ll have to wait until Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 24th.
