That’s right. Nicolas Cage almost played Superman in an actual movie. Nicolas Damn Cage, people. HOW DID THIS FILM NOT EVER GET MADE?!
Apparently back in the 1990s there was supposed to be a film directed by Tim Burton starring Cage called Superman Lives. The video you see below was shot in 1997 and shows Cage modeling his Superman suit and conversing with Burton about how it feels.
It comes from a new documentary called The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? by director Jon Schnepp that comes out on DVD, Blu-ray and VOD on July 9th.
Kevin Smith, who was originally supposed to write the script for Superman Lives, had this to say in the documentary, “Now, when you think about it, if somebody was just like, ‘Would you like to see a Nic Cage Superman movie?’ I’d be like ‘Fuck’ and ‘Yes, take all my money, ’cause I want to see what that looks like.'”
Damn right take all my money!
Man, again I ask, how did this not happen? Cage named his son Kal-El for Christ’s sake. I guess we’ll just have to wait for the documentary to be released to find out why we were deprived of this potential for cinematic greatness.
