A New Spaceballs Movie Is Officially In The Works And Now Everyone’s Day Is Made

While the worldwide release of Star Wars has everyone joyfully doing the Deion Sanders high-step down the street, Mel Brooks has dropped the perfect bombshell: Spaceballs: The Search For More Money. Yes, it’s true. And yes, that’s the tentative title.

According to Nerdist, Brooks hopes to start filming in 2016 and lure back as much of the original cast as possible, though many of the key cogs in the wheel have passed away in John Candy and Joan Rivers. Given that this is a Mel Brooks production, though, I don’t have even the slightest worry about whatever his consistently brilliant approach ends up being; especially since I’m already laughing at the name of the movie.

However, the absolute must here is if Dark Helmet’s involved, and I’m sure he is, he must again be played by the great Rick Moranis. The problem with that is Moranis stepped away from acting and the Hollywood scene altogether back in 1997 — after his wife passed away from breast cancer — so he could be a stay at home dad for his kids and offer them the kind of life he had growing up. Which, frankly, is one of the coolest things I’ve heard.

But if Moranis has one last dose of comedic genius to offer the world — and I pray that he does — it’s gotta be Spaceballs.

Seriously, no one else is allowed to play this role. If he passes on it, Brooks needs to introduce a new character named Darker Helmet.
