Breaking Down Grunt Style’s ‘Military Movies We Love’ List

Grunt Style military movies

Grunt Style

Grunt Style and American Grit have been putting a ton of great content in their ongoing campaign to highlight and honor our military and veterans. Recently, I came across their list of movies that represent each major branch of the military. Anyone who knows me knows that I have extremely strong opinions on movies, so I was intrigued to see what flicks they would pick. I found the list…interesting.

For the record, I am not judging the Grunt Style team for their choices. Enjoy the movies you want to enjoy and live your life. My opinions are my own and you don’t have to agree. With that said, let’s dive into this very silly list.

Army – In the Army Now (1994)

Right off the bat, I’m already skeptical. Just because “Army” is right in the title doesn’t mean it deserves to be highlighted. This movie packs a 1-2 punch of possibly the least funny comic actors of the 90s (or all time): Pauly Shore and Andy Dick. Surely, there are any number of Army-related movies that could have taken this spot.

Navy – Down Periscope (1996)

This is when I took a deep breath and realized I shouldn’t take this list that seriously. Considering that this movie boasts Kelsey Grammer and a director who worked on Major League, The Sting, and Sleepless in Seattle, it should be so much better. Spoiler alert: it’s not.

Marines – Major Payne (1995)

Just when I thought this list was doomed, this was the saving grace. I always have a soft spot for this movie because I always have a soft spot for the Wayans brothers. Those guys rarely missed when it came to movies and TV shows in the 90s. This silly romp won’t blow you away, but there are more than enough laughs to see you through.

Coast Guard – The Guardian (2006)

Makes sense. I can’t think of any other movies related to the Coast Guard. I should hate this movie. I hated Ashton Kutcher’s attempt at making serious movies in the 2000s. I DESPISE Kevin Costner. With all of that working against it, I don’t hate this movie. It’s not great, but it’s certainly not boring. A solid adventure ride to catch on cable when there’s nothing else on.

Air Force – Captain Marvel (2019)

With all the hullabaloo surrounding MCU movies, it’s easy to overlook the original origin movies of each character and remember that Captain Marvel started out as an Air Force pilot.

Did I enjoy this one? Absolutely, especially because Brie Larson is a badass. Could I tell you anything that happened with regard to the plot? Not really, because I have a hard time differentiating between most Marvel movies. I’m in the minority when it comes to appreciating superhero movies these days, but Captain Marvel is objectively very good.
