If you’ve ever watched a mixed martial arts or combat sports bout, you know that these are not just athletes; they’re warriors dedicated to their crafts and willing to sacrifice for their discipline. Kind of sounds an awful lot like military veterans, doesn’t it? It shouldn’t surprise you, then, that many professional MMA fighters are veterans. Grunt Style and American Grit recently highlighted some of the more notable veterans in the sport.

Randy “The Natural” Couture: One of the most legendary UFC fighters of all time has quite the pre-MMA resume. In addition to an extensive amateur wrestling career in college and Olympic Trails, Couture also served as a Sergeant in the 101st Airborne Division. If you’re like me and you’ve watched Band of Brothers too many times, you know that being a Screaming Eagle is pretty badass.

Mike “The Marine” Richman: What gave it away that Richman was a vet? Prior to training in MMA, Richman served in three tours of Iraq and attained the rank of Sergeant. After competing on The Ultimate Fighter and in Bellator MMA, you can now find him competing in the light heavyweight division of Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BroBible is an affiliate partner of BKFC).

Rocky Marciano: Before we had MMA, boxing reigned supreme in the world of combat sports, and Marciano reigned supreme as World Heavyweight Champion. Before he donned the gloves, “The Brockton Blockbuster” served in the Army for two years ferrying supplies across the English Channel to Normandy.
