Ford wanted to make a splash into the performance electric vehicle market, so they took the iconic Mustang name and attached it to the upcoming sporty SUV named the Mustang Mach-E. The all-electric SUV will have a high-performance model that takes aim at Tesla.

The 2021 Mustang Mach-E GT is packed with 480 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, while the GT Performance Edition will have the same horsepower, but have 634 lb-ft of torque. Ford claims that the 2021 Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition will be lighting quick, jetting from 0-60 mph in a mere 3.5 seconds, which matches the time of the Tesla Model Y Performance, but still lagging far behind the 2.6-second run by Tesla’s Model X Performance vehicle. Meanwhile, the GT model is no slouch and zooms from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds.

The GT Performance Edition is able to accelerate that fast by the dual electric motor powertrain drawing more power from the 88-kilowatt-hour battery. There are two electric motors, one on each axle, sending power to all four wheels.

The Performance Edition Ford will reportedly boast an EPA-estimated range of 235 miles, while the standard GT will travel 250 miles on a single charge. The Performance Edition Mach-E GT comes equipped with massive 19-inch red-colored Brembo front brakes, 20-inch wheels wrapped in 245/45R20 Pirelli summer tires, carbonized gray grille, and a MagneRide suspension for improved handling.

“We already pushed the envelope by creating an electric vehicle with the pony badge, so it’s only natural that we push it even further,” said Darren Palmer, Ford’s global director, battery-electric vehicles, in a press release. “Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition not only gives you the added performance you expect from the GT name, but accentuates the thrill with the responsiveness of an all-electric powertrain.”

The Mustang Mach-E GT and Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition will be available in Cyber Orange Metallic Tri-Coat, Dark Matter Gray Metallic, Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat, Star White Metallic Tri-Coat, Grabber Blue Metallic, Shadow Black, Iconic Silver Metallic, and Space White Metallic.

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT and GT Performance Edition will be available at the end of next summer, and will start to take orders in the spring.
