The 2018 Detroit Auto Show AKA North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) kicks off this weekend, but Ford couldn’t wait to show off their high-performance 2019 Edge ST. This SUV not only looks incredible, but also performs nothing like a typical SUV. The 2019 Edge received a remarkable cosmetic overhaul as well as getting stocked with much more tech. The 2019 Edge ST is the first time that Ford brought the high-performance variant to one of their SUVs.
The Detroit Auto Show officially starts on January 14, but we get a glimpse of what the future holds for Ford. The Ford Performance team enhanced the regular old Edge and gave the ST variant a 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 that pumps out 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. The high-performance variant of the Edge crossover boasts the most powerful V6 engine in its class. There are paddle shifters for manual gear changes in the ST version. A new “sport mode” allows drivers to experience more aggressive driving while maintaining comfort and control. Speaking of control, the ST variant also gets larger brakes, a firmer sport-tuned suspension, and 21-inch wheels wrapped in sticky summer tires. This is a track-worthy machine.
Standard features include all-wheel drive, 8-speed automatic transmission, a stop-start engine, LED headlights, and a wireless charging pad. The whole fam can jump on the internet while flying down the highway because the Edge has WiFi capability for up to 10 devices and with up to a 50-foot range. Drivers can use a smartphone app to lock, unlock, remotely start, and locate the Edge. You can even check details such as tire pressure and fuel status from the comfort of your home.
Safety features available include the Evasive Steering Assist system that assists drivers to avoid accidents. Plus it also features adaptive cruise control with a system that helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane and post-collision braking that slows the vehicle after a collision. Ford’s Sync3 infotainment systems comes with Waze, which includes its police cruiser-spotting tool, perfect for when you’re powering down the freeway in this speedy SUV.
“Edge ST puts a new animal on the road – a performance SUV with a track mentality,” said Hau Thai-Tang, executive vice president of product development and purchasing. “From a performance standpoint, and with its SUV silhouette and versatility, it sets a new standard Edge fans will love to drive.” The Edge ST replaces the Edge Sport in the Ford lineup. Pricing for the 2019 Ford Edge ST was not immediately announced, but it is expected to go on sale in the late summer.
