Welcome back to another edition of CLOTHES FOR BROS. I’m stoked to have you here. Allow me to go on a little bit of a preamble here, and I think, if you’re reading this, you’ll be able to relate.
When it comes to my hobbies, I’m a full-send kind of guy. I always dive in headfirst and let them swallow my entire personality. For example, I got back into skiing a couple of years ago after a decade-long hiatus. Now I can’t imagine life without an Ikon Pass and scooping up new planks every season. Like buying skis the very last day of ski season, fully aware I’d spend seven months staring at them leaning against my wall. I proudly pay for AllTrails+, despite only doing a handful of truly daunting hikes a year, and never really going all that far off the grid. I bought a wetsuit after surfing exactly twice. Namaste on the beach for a while instead of in the water, you know what I mean?
That’s why I’m completely obsessed with the new limited-edition Howler Brothers x Toyota Land Cruiser capsule collection. It’s the perfect steez for self-proclaimed SUV bros like myself who are always scheming escapes to rip through the desert off-road in a Can-Am. There’s no doubt in my mind this is going to sell out quickly once the word gets out in the Land Cruiser community.
I’ve spent years lurking Land Cruiser Reddit threads like they’re Zillow for overland geeks. I have a Facebook Marketplace alert set up to notify me about 1985 Land Cruiser FJ60s within 100 miles of my Los Angeles home, hoping to snag a manual-transmission project rig from my birth year somewhere in Southern California. I don’t have many goals for getting older, but one of them is to fully embrace the Land Cruiser lifestyle of rods and reels beside coolers at an alpine lake, with permanently stashed camp chairs in the trunk.
The Howler Brothers x Toyota Land Cruiser capsule collection hits right in my obsession zone and looks good for trips to the mountain, beach, taco stand, or spontaneous three-day loops through Big Bend National Park with random people you meet in the sleeping bag section of REI. It tells your story. Or at least, the story you keep spinning.
Here’s why it’s rad:
Land Cruisers have become an enduring symbol of aspiration on wheels. The terms “vibe” and “lifestyle” are wildly overused these days, but you get it. The Land Cruiser thing is a whole damn lifestyle.
I’ve been hooked on the lore and timeless heritage of these cars since reading a now-infamous Reddit story about a guy in Texas accidentally buying a used Land Cruiser previously owned by dead Nigerian warlord. It’s become a sort of trope in the Land Cruiser community. Is it a true story? Questionable. Is it oddly fitting? Absolutely. Land Cruisers just have this global mystique built for epic 4-wheel drive adventures in the jungle and desert, even if your farthest journey is just Santa Barbara for the afternoon. Many of them still on the road are beasts after 250,000+ miles and proper maintenance. There’s something to be said for that kind of intentional craftsmanship and engineering in an era of planned obsolescence by our corporate overlords.
The other reason this collab rocks is because Howler Brothers nails the vibe for outdoor bros with lots of facial hair like me. Think: Millennials who’d rather cast a fly fishing rod than swing golf clubs, who find it easier to rattling off breweries and disc golf courses than fantasy football stats. You know the type, and hell maybe you are the type: The quintessential Venice surfer, Austin backyard bbq snob, Moab dirtbag, Flagstaff raft bro, and Bend trail junkie aesthetic. I’m still rocking my three-year-old Howler Brothers Hermanos hat, with grease stains from flushing the Sea-Doo’s saltwater and all. They just sent me the new Land Cruiser snapback in a classic overlanding Jerry-Can and I unboxed it on my TikTok. I’m feeling swagged out. Mahalo, Howler Brothers fam.
@brandonwenerd Ok I wasn’t expecting this when it showed up at my door the other day. Can’t wait to use this on some adventures over the summer.
“This collaboration with Toyota Land Cruiser is a natural fit,” said Chase Heard, CEO of Howler Brothers. “Both brands thrive on craftsmanship and exploration.”
Inspired by the adventures of the Howler Brothers founders in the Costa Rican jungle, this collection captures their adventurous spirit in vintage Land Cruisers. Built for full embracing wild places you can track down. You know, rugged yet refined. Vintage-inspired graphics, bomber materials ready for campfires and bike rides.
“At Toyota, we believe adventure doesn’t start when you turn the ignition; it begins with a mindset,” said Dedra DeLilli, vice president of marketing communications at Toyota. “Partnering with Howler Brothers lets us authentically celebrate exploration and versatility.”
Exactly the gear you want when pavement ends and your cell signal dips somewhere deep in the Sierras.
