The market for tablets has declined as smartphone screen sizes have increased. These devices offer more screen size than a smartphone, but not quite the computing power of a laptop. The Huawei MediaPad M5 attempts to give the best of smartphones and laptops without being too bulky or losing too much performance. If you are in the market for a tablet, then you are going to want to consider the Huawei MediaPad M5.

The size of the M5 is perfectly portable and outstanding for travel, but big enough to watch a two-hour movie. The Huawei MediaPad M5 comes in three different versions: an 8.4-inch model, a 10.8-inch model, and the M5 Pro model which comes with a slightly faster processor and a stylus in the box. The stylus, which is called an M-Pen, allows for you to be creative by drawing and scribbling. The M-Pen boasts 4,096 layers of pressure sensitivity which is perfect for artists. The software converts handwriting into text with great proficiency. The only issue is that the M-Pen doesn’t clip onto the actual unit, which makes the stylus easier to lose.

Both standard MediaPad M5 tablets use Huawei’s Kirin 960 processor backed by 4GB of RAM and 64GB of file storage. The chip handled all of my gaming with ease with no lag whatsoever. The unit is super responsive and performance did not diminish even with multitasking with 15 apps open at the same time. The MediaPad M5 runs smoothly on Google’s Android 8.0 Oreo operating system. There is a MicroSD slot for extra memory, which Apple doesn’t offer.

Sadly, there’s no 3.5 mm headphone jack, but they do come bundled with a USB-C adapter so you can plug in the headset of your choice. However, the speakers are so tremendous on this unit that you’re going to want to ditch your headphones and turn up the volume on these fantastic speakers. The sound system on this tablet is made by high-end audio purveyor Harman Kardon. The 8.5-inch MediaPad M5 has two speakers, one on the top and another on the bottom. While the 10.8 models have four speakers, two on each side. I was absolutely blown away by how awesome the speakers were. Even at high volumes and with heavy bass there was no distortion. This is by far the best sound on a tablet that I’ve ever heard. The speakers provide 360-degree surround sound meaning you can hear every explosion and every bullet ricochet in perfect clarity when you’re watching Season 2 of Luke Cage.

On the 10.8-inch model, the display is a vibrant IPS 16:10 ratio screen with a resounding resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 and a pixel-per-inch density of 280. The screen is bright and sharp thanks to the 2k ClariVu technology that improves picture quality by 20 percent. The location of the fingerprint sensor is comfortable and natural. The fingerprint sensor was accurate and quick.

When it comes to the battery, the standard 10.8-inch M5 and the M5 Pro come with a 7,500 mAh battery, while the 8.4-inch model has a 5,100 mAh battery. The 10.8-inch models should last 10.5 hours of use and the 8.4-inch version should last 10 hours. Both devices lasted more than a day of use from me.

While you probably won’t use the camera very often, the M5’s camera is nothing to scoff at. There is a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and an 8-megapixel front cam for selfies. The camera software offers several options such as Pro mode, night shot, and panorama.

The tablet has an aluminum unibody with a luxurious feel and the screen is a 2.5D piece of glass. The thick bezels give you a place to rest your thumbs and are welcoming on this tablet. For me, I found the 10.8-inch model to be the perfect size for binge-watching Netflix and playing PUBG while in the landscape configuration. The MediaPad M5 is a marvelous tablet for entertainment that also provides a good deal of productivity, especially with the Pro model.

The 8.4-inch model goes for $319.99 and the 10.8-inch model goes for $449.99.

The M5 Pro has a keyboard dock that allows for a laptop-like usage. The protective case has a built-in keyboard and you’re able to manipulate the tablet to an easy-to-use position.
