Are you looking for a motorcycle? You will be after seeing how tremendous Indian Motorcycle’s brand new FTR 1200 and FTR 1200 S. These two lean, mean street machines from America’s oldest motorcycle company are inspired by the flat track racers and you’re gonna want one.
The all-new 2019 Indian Motorcycle FTR 1200 and FTR 1200 S is styled after the championship-winning FTR750 flat track racing motorcycle that was introduced in November of 2016. The FTR 1200 features ProTaper flat tracker aluminum handlebars that really complete that race bike vibe.
The FTR 1200 is built on a trellis frame and aluminum subframe with an asymmetrical single-side rear shock mount for a sporty riding position. Both models have an inverted front suspension and dual brembo brakes. There is electronic stability and anti-lock brakes (ABS). The FTR 1200 S comes equipped with lean-angle sensitive stability control, wheelie mitigation control for improved confidence and control, and traction control system with three ride modes: Standard, Sport, and Rain.
The airbox is above the engine for enhanced airflow and the fuel tank is located under the seat for a lower center of gravity and more centralized weight distribution. The FTR 1200 weighs 488 pounds dry, and the S model weighs one pound more.
Both models ride on 19-inch front wheels and 18-inch rear wheels wrapped in newly-developed Dunlop street tires with flat track-inspired tread. Also, both motorcycles have full LED lighting, cruise control, and fast-charge USB ports.
Now on to what makes these bikes roar. Both models are powered by a new liquid-cooled 1203cc V-twin engine that pumps out 120 horsepower, 85 ft-lbs of torque, and a 12.5:1 compression ratio. That’s more than enough get-go and plenty of low-end punch and flexibility that ensures “every rider feels like a pro when they twist the throttle.” There’s a six-speed manual constant mesh transmission with a power-assisted slipper clutch for blistering fast shifting.
The FTR 1200 S also comes equipped with a fully adjustable front and rear piggy-back suspension with preload, compression, and rebound adjustments for maximum personalization. The upgraded version also boasts a 4.3-inch customizable Ride Command LCD touch screen with Bluetooth to easily link up with any mobile device.
“This is an extremely exciting platform for us, and after investing such a significant amount of time, expertise and energy in the design process, it’s an incredible feeling to finally show the world these motorcycles,” said Rich Christoph, the Indian Motorcycle Senior Designer who was also instrumental in the design of the FTR750 and FTR1200 Custom.
“Our vision from the beginning was to be more than a traditional American V-twin brand. We continually seek to broaden Indian Motorcycle’s reach to a wider range of riders, and FTR 1200 represents a significant step forward in that strategy,” said Steve Menneto, President, Indian Motorcycle. “Indian Motorcycle was founded on performance and innovation, and we remain grounded by our founder’s mindset of constantly pushing forward. In light of that history, the FTR 1200 is a natural
extension for the brand that we couldn’t be more excited about.”
The FTR 1200 starts at $12,999 and is available in Thunder Black. The FTR 1200 S starts at $14,999 and is available in Indian Motorcycle Red over Steel Gray, Titanium Metallic over Thunder Black Pearl. For $16,000 you can snatch up a special edition 1200 S with a red frame and Race-Replica paint scheme matching the FTR750 race bike.
