Angel’s Envy in Japanese Mizunara Oak Casks

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Angel’s Envy’s Founder’s Day they are releasing a truly exquisite expression that also comes in a reusable crystal decanter. Let’s talk about the bottle first. This is a re-usable crystal decanter that is lead-free and all of the labels are easily removed by setting it in 100-Fahrenheit water for 10 minutes. Then you can then add this to your permanent collection of decanters label-free if you want. The crystal topper is also gorgeous.
This is Angel Envy’s first-ever Bourbon finished in old-growth Japanese Mizunara Oak. The whiskey is a 50/50 blend of 4-year and 9-year Kentucky straight bourbons that are finished in hand-selected and charred new Japanese Mizunara oak casks for two more years. Mizunara grows at about half the rate of American white oak and these trees aren’t considered fully mature until they are 200 years old which means it is EXCEPTIONALLY RARE to be able to use these for whiskey aging. Angel’s Envy was able to obtain five barrels for this special release.
Part of what makes the Mizunara oak so special is that it’s more porous than other woods which allows the whiskey to flow in and out of the wood easier and take on rich notes of coconut, smoke, spice, peppercorn, clove, and sandalwood. In total, there are only 1,200 bottles that will be made available. Members of Angel Envy’s ‘500 Main’ insider group will have first access to these bottles (on August 19th) that will retail for $350 with the rest being released to the public on September 1.

First up here is the Courage & Conviction American Single Malt Whisky which set out to rival the finest single malts in the world and put truly great American single malt on the map. It is aged in THREE core barrel types. The first is American oak bourbon casks which adds notes of butterscotch, caramel, and vanilla. I could stop there because those are three of my favorite flavors in whisky but it gets better. The second barrel types are sherry casks which include Fino, Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez to give this whisky brown sugar, spice, plum, and tart cherry.
The third barrel type are Cuvée casks sourced from European red wine producers. These casks are broken down, shaved, re-toasted and re-charred and this energizes the wood sugars to bring forth barrel spice, toasted pecan, and delectable red fruit.
