What makes a movie a “guilty pleasure”? To me, it implies that the movie might not be considered great by traditional standards or popularity, but you find yourself going back to it when you need something familiar, comforting, or just plain fun to watch. Think of that one junk food that you like more than most people (I will always love pizza Pringles; sue me). When it comes to teen dramas, it’s hard to think of a better guilty pleasure than Cruel Intentions, which you can watch free on Plex this month.

I probably watched this movie for the first time when I was pre-pubescent and was not prepared for what was in store in this movie. I’m 30 years old now and I still can’t believe how naughty it is. Gossip Girl ain’t got nothing on Cruel Intentions when it comes to spoiled-rich New York City teenagers behaving poorly.
The cast is an absolute carpet-bombing of late ’90s/early 2000s teenage angst: Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Selma Blair, Tara Reid, Joshua Jackson…it’s crazy how much talent is packed into what was considered a throwaway teen movie.
I feel like an old church lady trying to explain what happens in this movie to people who haven’t seen it. What makes the plot even crazier is that it’s a retelling of an 18th-century French novel (Les Liaisons dangereuses, which I don’t know how to pronounce). I’m pretty sure Pierre Choderlos de Laclos (don’t know how to pronounce this either) had no idea that his work would be turned into something that put quite a few kids through puberty.
