Most millennial horror fans are familiar with the mid-2000s horror bonanza The Hills Have Eyes, but did you know that this is actually a remake? Before Wes Craven was printing money with the Nightmare on Elm’s Street and Scream franchises, he was cutting his teeth with the original 1977 version, which you can watch FREE on Plex this month.

If you’ve seen the remake, this one has a pretty formulaic setup: a family on a long road trip through Nevada finds themselves stuck in the middle of nowhere when they encounter another family. The only problem is that this other family is a group of cannibal savages and they’re awfully hungry.

While the Wes Craven original is considered to be superior, I have to give props to the remake for giving more backstory to explain how Papa Jupiter and his cannibalistic clan came to be. In the 2006 version, they’re deformed due to decades of nuclear testing in the deserts of New Mexico. Still, the success of the original paved the way for Craven to become one the greatest horror movie directors of all time and is well worth your time.
