I’ll be completely honest: it’s hard to write about this movie without wanting to stop what I’m doing and watch it again for the 30th time. This is not only one of my personal favorite movies of all time (easy top 10), but I also believe it to be one of the greatest movies of all time. It’s L.A. Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce as relative unknowns. Kevin Spacey long before we knew he was a problem. Danny DeVito, James Cromwell, and an extra-sultry Kim Basinger to round out the cast. The eventual director of 8 Mile. And above all else, a PERFECT script. It’s close to impossible to find something wrong with this flick.
This movie has so many twists and turns that it’s hard to summarize. Here’s the short version: There’s murder and corruption galore in 1950s Los Angeles, and Detectives Bud White (Crowe), Ed Exley (Pearce), and Jack Vincennes (Spacey) are trying to get to the bottom of things.
I first watched L.A. Confidential in a film class in high school and I’ve been hooked ever since. This is a great movie to tell people you love because you can make yourself sound smarter than you are. “I’m really quite fond of the neo-noir genre of film.” I couldn’t tell you exactly what “neo-noir” means, but I know L.A. Confidential is in that genre, so that’s good enough for me.
A movie this good should have run away with the Oscar for Best Picture, right? Wrong. At the Academy Awards in 1998, L.A. Confidential won Best Adapted Screenplay while Good Will Hunting won Best Original Screenplay. BOTH lost to Titanic. That’s an absolute carpet-bombing
