How’s everyone taking care of themselves during Men’s Mental Health Month this June? It could be as simple as integrating healthy habits like going for a walk or cutting back on drinking, but some men need a little more help than that. As we saw from BetterHelp’s 2026 State of Stigma Report, there are a lot of people who could benefit from therapy, but avoid trying for a multitude of reasons. But are there specific reasons why men in particular seem especially hesitant? We’ve got some theories as to why.

1. It’s not considered “masculine” to talk about your feelings.
What a ridiculous argument in this day and age, but it comes up too often. There’s nothing manly about bottling everything up until you eventually explode and it becomes everyone else’s problem. Taking care of your mental health should get the same care and attention that taking care of something like your house or car gets.
2. No one has ever given you space to work through things.
Similar to the theory above, in that some men don’t talk about things because no one’s ever prompted them to talk about things.
3. People might think there’s something “wrong” with you.
“Therapy? That’s for crazy people!” The idea that only those with severe mental illness or trauma need therapy is ridiculous. At its core, it’s a constructive conversation with a trustworthy and unbiased sounding board. The bottom line is that EVERYONE can benefit from something like that, and BetterHelp is a great place to start.
