James Harrison spends a half-million dollars a year on massages

One day James Harrison will look at his bank account and wonder where it all went. He’ll think about the lavish parties, the cars and the half-million dollar yearly stipend on massages. Wait what?

In an interview with Bengals.com, Harrison revealed he spends up to $600k on his finely tuned body.

You said you spend $400,000-$600,000 a year on your body. Can you say on what?

JH: “As far as training, I have a hyperbaric chamber. I rent a hyperbaric chamber when I’m in Arizona. I have massages and I bring people in from New York, Arizona to where I’m at. There’s that cost. Like I said, I get body work almost every single day except Saturday and Sunday. I have a homeopathic doctor and I do a lot of homeopathic things. It’s just a lot, supplements, so on and so forth.”

On the outside, this looks like a poor financial decision. That kind of money is better spent in investments, something that makes you more money in the future. But economically speaking, Harrison’s making a wise choice. Hear me out.

At 35, Harrison’s career is grinding to a close and at that age, most guys don’t have anything left in the tank. He’s playing two more years at a position that most would consider the most physically demanding. Perhaps he’s able to do that because of his peak physical condition. A condition that was acquired with years of massage. In other words, his earning potential is directly proportional to his performance ability.

You say he’s wasting his money, I say he’s investing in himself. And right now that looks like a wise choice. Good on you James.
