Which would you prefer: $4,000 or a world record fish?

Karen Wright, is a mother of 2, resident of Watsons Bay, Australia (Sydney) is now potentially a world record holder for the 317lb Bluefin tuna she recently caught.

Karen Wright’s fish is currently under review for the female angler 15kg line class Bluefin Tuna record, however, had she chosen to sell the fish she would have been roughly $4,000 richer. So again I ask, which would you choose: $4,000 or a world record?

Let’s put her fish in perspective, shall we?

TWENTY THOUSAND sushi rolls from the one fish. Now, relative to other Bluefin tuna records it’s certainly not the biggest fish ever caught (or even close). The all-tackle record for Bluefin Tuna comes in at a whopping 1,496 POUNDS, caught by Ken Fraser in October, 1979 off Nova Scotia, Canada.

The DailyMail reports:

After posing for photos next to the giant tuna, Ms Wright cut it up and gave chunks to her friends.

Recreational anglers are not allowed to sell their catch so she missed out an a potential $4,000 she could have made by selling it.

Ms Wright, who is the president of the Sydney Game Fishing Club, said bluefin tuna had been running off Sydney all week, with several other anglers reeling in huge catches.

‘The Sydney Game Fishing is pleased to announce that Karen Wright club president has just weighted the one of the largest Southern Bluefin tuna to ever be captured on rod and reel by a female angler on 15kg line,’ the club said.

Me? I’m conflicted on whether or not I’d take the money or world record. Fishing records can be broken at any time, and once you hold a record your only goal in life is then to beat your own record, right? But do you butcher a species (Bluefin) that’s extremely overfished and on the verge of a worldwide fishery collapse, all for the sake of $4,000?

I’m leaning towards taking the world record because you’re now in the books, but you also have motivation to always head out to try and best your own record. And there’s nothing wrong with more fishing, right?
