A Czech man named Vit Jedlicka has just founded a new, sovereign European nation named ‘Free Republic of Liberland’, or Liberland for short. Upon founding the new European nation, Mr. Jedlicka promptly named himself to be President, and has began working on his dream of building a nation that prides itself upon “personal and economic freedom of its people, which is guaranteed by the Constitution, which significantly limits the power of politicians so they could not interfere too much in the freedoms of the Liberland nation.” Presumably Vit Jedlick used the name ‘Liberland’ because ‘Petoria’ was already taken by ‘Family Guy’, as was ‘Freedonia’ which was used in an old Marx Brothers movie.

The ‘Free Republic of Liberland’ came into existence on April 13th, 2015, and exists on a tract of land that is unclaimed due to a border dispute between Croatia and Serbia. The official languages of the new country are English and Czech, and Liberland’s motto is “To Live And Let Live.”

Here’s a short video with all the pertinent information regarding this new sovereign nation:

Contrary to what you may believe, this is NOT a joke. The Free Republic of Liberland has already attracted over 110,000 fans on Facebook, and we all know that there’s nothing more official than being ‘Facebook Official’. In addition to just Facebook fans, according to the website LittleRock there’s already been over 160,000 applications by people wanting to be citizens of Liberland, which is easily more than the 7 km² tract of land could even comfortably accommodate.

The Free Republic of Liberland already has its own flag:

There’s also a magnificent ‘Coat of Arms’:

I mentioned before that the Free Republic of Liberland resides in an area of disputed land on the borders between Croatia and Serbia. Here’s what the nation’s official website (where you can apply to be a citizen) has to say about that:

Free Republic of Liberland (hereinafter “Liberland”) is a sovereign state located between Croatia and Serbia on the west bank of the Danube river. The nearest towns are Zmajevac (Croatia) and Bački Monoštor (Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Serbia). On some maps, this area is referred to as “Gornja Siga”.

Liberland came into existence due to a border dispute between Croatia and Serbia. This area along the west bank of the Danube river is not claimed by Croatia, Serbia or any other country. It was therefore terra nullius, a no man’s land, until Vít Jedlička seized the opportunity and on 13 April 2015 formed a new state in this territory – Liberland. The boundary was defined so as not to interfere with the territory of Croatia or Serbia. Its total area of approximately 7 km² is now the third smallest sovereign state, after the Vatican and Monaco.

If I were starting a sovereign nation myself I’d obviously had gone with the name Cassistan or Cass’ Blanca, because it would confuse the shit out of everyone. If you’re interested in learning more about Liberland you can head on over to the nation’s website. For now, here are a few photos taken in the great nation of Liberland (which I culled from their Facebook page):

I’d like to extend my best wishes to Vit Jedlicka and the citizens of the Free Republic of Liberland, as I’m sure there will eventually be disputes with the neighboring countries. So best of luck to the Liberlandians in the battle of maintaining their sovereignty, and protecting those borders!

And on while I’ve still got you, I’d just like to mention that this bro is basically living every freedom lover’s dream. He’s started his own nation built entirely on foundation of freedom, and that’s not something many bros throughout history have ever been able to accomplish (aside from a few righteous bros who met in Philly back in the Summer of 1776).
