Japanese Prison Debuts New Mascot for Inmates to Murder

A Japanese prison housing a range of convicted criminals has unveiled a cuddly life-size mascot that bosses hope will help change the jail’s forbidding image.

Officials say Asahikawa Prison in Japan’s far north is too often thought of only as a dark place with imposing grey walls and not as a place of rehabilitation.

To be fair, we’re at a point where we should expect the weird and unexpected from Japan. But one wonders how long it will be until ol’ Katakkuri-chan here gets shanked in the shower. What will that do to the prison’s image?

Katakkuri-chan has both a male and female version and wears a prison warden’s uniform. May as well paint a target on this thing’s back. It’s not going to end well.
