America’s Smartest And Richest People Are Also Its Drunkest, So … Go Society?

Being smart and rich seems like it would be awesome. Because you are probably the president or a surgeon or a consultant or a titan of industry.

All good gigs imo.

So you’ve already got a pretty good life going, what with the money and the intelligence and the level of comfort that comes with those two. What could make that better? Well… being drunk, that’s for sure.

And if you are smart and rich, you probably are already drunk. A new Gallup poll found that to be the case. Our country’s hardest drinkers are not the miners plucking coal from the ground, or the farmers tilling the land, or even our bus drivers.

Nah, it’s the people who already got it good. The smart and rich folk.

Upper-income and highly educated Americans are more likely than other Americans to say they drink alcohol. Whereas eight in 10 adults in these socio-economic status groups say they drink, only about half of lower-income Americans and those with a high school diploma or less say they drink.

Americans of higher socio-economic status certainly have greater economic resources, and can likely afford to buy alcohol when they want to drink. But they also are more likely to participate in activities that may involve drinking such as dining out at restaurants, going on vacation or socializing with coworkers (given the higher drinking rates among working compared with nonworking Americans). The direct connection between drinking and engaging in these activities is not clear from the data, but such a connection could help explain why upper-income Americans are more likely to drink alcohol than other American.

So not only can they coast by on the compounding interest of their already swollen bank accounts, they can booze it up while they do so.

Straight. If I had money I’d be hemmed up all the god damn time. What’s the point otherwise?
