Some criminals have uncanny instincts at covering their tracks and making evidence disappear, meanwhile other culprits are not cut out to commit crimes and basically put up a figurative billboard detailing their felonies with a man standing on it screaming, “Hey cops! I’m over here committing wrongdoings and you should come and arrest me right now!!!” Unfortunately for Michelle Smith White, it appears that she would be categorized as the latter. The former Charles E. Jordan High School teacher was charged with having sex with a student. White became friends with the female student in 2012, when the girl was 15, however things quickly escalated into a sexual relationship. In April of this year the former 37-year-old Durham, N.C. educator was warned by the female victim’s parents to stop communicating with their daughter, however Smith couldn’t help herself and a month later it was exposed that the two were still exchanging text messages. White resigned in April after she had held a teaching job since March 1997. In July, Smith was charged with taking indecent liberties with a student and engaging in a sex offense with a student. White had worked as a dance teacher from March 1997 until she resigned in April. Authorities obtained a search warrant and extracted a laptop computer, two tablets, two cellphones and a video camera from White’s home. Oh yeah and a rather damaging piece of evidence, several framed photos of the teacher with the girl. It gets worse; they also discovered a handwritten card to the girl and a binder filled with notes from White’s husband to the girl. It gets worse; on the cellphones they found texts that contained sexually explicit messages included mentions of a “threesome” and alluded to having White’s husband join the sex. It gets worse; White also had a tattoo of the student’s name, initials and “artist rendering which would be symbolic of the juvenile.”
This is how I imagine how the interrogation between the teacher and detectives went down:
Detectives: So did you have sex with your student?
Teacher: No. Gross. I am an upstanding educator and would never do such a horrid thing.
Detectives: Why do you have photos with the student?
Teacher: I love all of my students.
Detectives: Want to tell us why there are text messages saying you wanted to have a menage a trois?
Teacher: It’s been years since I’ve spoke French, isn’t that the cuisine with the snails?
Detectives: You have the student’s name tattooed on your body. Care to explain that?
Teacher: Well that’s easy to explain. You see. Umm. Well. I love my students? I don’t know. I did it alright! I’m the worst.
Detectives: Book her!
